RIFLE SHOOTING
Alv ARAN A CLUB EVENTS HIGH-STANDARD REVEALED CITY SERVICE CHAMPIONSHIP Tho Aknrana Defence ftifle Club staged a' "ladies day" shoot at 300 yards last week-end, conditions being good throughout the afternoon. Owing to a shortage of targets marked with the, Northern Rifle Association's rings the full 12in. bull was used and this assisted the riflemen in spite of the difficult sighting on the smaller mark. Possibles were made by W. Colquhoun and Jl. Jorrie (Kaitaia), while the other scores were correspondingly high. Tho City Club commenced its service championship at the same range, hut with the regulation targets. Considerable interest will be taken in the competition this season as with H. Simmonds, J. H. Kearney, A. G. Devore, D. F. Perrin and H. Judkins, who are all Dominion champions, and 1. J. Spry, C. J. M. Clark, F. Bowes and R. C. Russell competing the title appears very open. Simmonds opened with a fine score on Saturday, which included 48 on the disc, but none of the others shot consistently enough to, secure high aggregates.
TEAMS' MATCH THEXTHAM CONTEST With the big teams' match at Trentliam in mind it is interesting to hear that W. Norris and W. Boreham, of Whangarei, will be making the trip south in March. The performances of both these men have been high class this season, there being little to choose between them. The Whangarei range is an easy one as is evidenced by the scores made on it, but if the northern representatives respond to coaching one or both may find their place in the tgam. L. Palmer, Otorohanga, has his nomination in, but the balance of the South Auckland names have yet to come. 1 When the trial is held' at Matamata in tho New Year a young team from ITangitniki may come through from Whakatane. This club has been responsible for some remarkable shooting recently for which credit is due to W. Moore/one of the most enthusiastic marksmen in the BaV of Plenty. Th* four top-men at the last double 500 vards shoot were: —J. Walker, 98; L. Davies, 98; H. Wilson, 97; L. Walker, 90. "These scores would do credit in any company. If the best team from the club comes through for tho Auckland meeting it Should be the strongest contender for the junior teams' match provided conditions are reason able. . An invitation has been received from Kaitaia by the local clubs for a match on Anniversary Day - and efforts are being made to accept' this in spite of the distance. One of the strongest clubs in the province numerically, the visit will go a long way in preserving the enthusiasm among the northernera whose club was formed only this year. It will be remembered that the best of its representatives gave an excellent account of themselves for novice shot® at the recent Northland Association meeting.
