METHOD LABOURER USED t: FARES TO GO TO JOBS [by tki/egkaph —pkkss association] WELLING TO X, Wednesday The circumstances under which a Dumber of farmers' anxious to obtain labour were defrauded, of money forwarded for travelling expenses by Leo Douglas Morpeth were described in Court when Morpt'th, aged 27, labourer, pleaded guilty to six charges of theft. In four cases £1 was involved, in the fifth 10s. and in the sixth a railway ticket valued at £T. _ The modus operandi was the answering of advertisements and on receipt of notification of engagement requesting that portion of the railway fare be forwarded. these latter arrangements being conducted by telegraph. Morpeth Used an assumed name, care of tlio r Auckland Post Office. Hq used the ticket mentioned, but did not go to the position. It was stated- that-the idea occurred to Morpeth as a result ot genuine applications to two farmers at the same time and both forwarding the fa re _ as requested. -He was given a month s imprisonment on each charge, two of the "terms to be cumulative.
