QUALITY OF MILK
SALES IN SOME BAKS NOT UP TO STANDARD COUNCIL TO SEEK POWERS Unofficial tests had shown that some milk bars,in Auckland were using milk that was not up to the required standard, and the Metropolitan Milk Council was anxious to see that this position was rectified, said the secretary of the council. Mr. N. 11. Chapman, yesterday. Ho added that the council had decided to wait on the Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Eraser, on his next visit to Auckland, to ask that the necessary authority he given for the supervision of all milk bars. There were at present 100 milk bars in the area covered by the Milk Council, Mr. Chapman stated, and of these 78 had voluntarily taken out licences with the council. Twenty-two had refused to do so, however, with the result that niilk served in some milk bars at present could not bo tested or inspected by either the council or the Department of Health. Mr. Chapman said the position had arisen as the result of a decision made by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in Wellington, that milk shakes, or milk containing other ingredients, was not milk. The Milk Council had circularised all milk bars asking that they take out licences which would allow for the regular testing of their supplies, but under the Supreme Court decision the council was not in a position to insist upon that procedure. , u A-j least 22 milk bars in Auckland are selling hundreds of gallons of milk a day, iu the form of milk shakes, which is not tested either by the council or by the Department of Health," said Mr. Chapman. "The public no doubt thinks that all milk sold in milk bars is as safe as that which tlicy have delivered to their houses."
