GAME OF BOWLS

CLUB COMPETITIONS PLAY ON SLOWER GREENS EXECUTIVE VISITS HELENSVILLE NEXT PENNANT MATCHES

BY SKIP

Slower greens wore the order on Saturday for the bowlers of Auckland on the off-day from the pennant urogram me. The absence of a* high wind, however, which lias liamjiered plavors of late, somewhat compensated for the heavier going. Club games made up the programme at most greens, while in other cases ordinary inter-club contests took place. The Auckland Centre executive took the opportunity of paying its annual visit to the Melensviile and Kaukapakapa Clubs. _At the latter club, which was visited in the late afternoon, the official opening ceremony was in progress, and the two presidents, Mr. F. A. Hosking. New Zealand Association, mid Mr. W. J. Trnscott, Auckland Centre, addressed the gathering. Rain interfered with tho games on the Helensville green to some extent, but letter conditions were met on tho following day, when another series of games was played against tho members cf the club. A strong wind, however, made play 011 the tricky side. Mr. Trnscott presented the Pafecoe Cup to Mr. ll.' A. Wilson, the winning skip i:n the Western Suburbs Competition.

PENNANT MATCHES THIRD ROUND CONTESTS Another important round in the pen. uant competition will ho played next Saturday, when the third series -of matches comes up for decision. The most interesting congest in section A will be 'that between the leading club. Stanley, which holds 75 per cent, and Hallyburton-Johnstone, third 011 the " list with 62,.") per cent of wins. As> both clubs arc six-quota ones, the meeting will afford a splendid opportunity of deciding their strength, Tho clubs appear to be evenly matched, and it is di/ficult to judge the result. It ' woidd not be surprising to find honours even, three wins each, when the came? are finished Hills Wo. the second club in the section with 66 per cent of wins, would appear to 4iave its test to date when opposed by Rocky Nook. Th<» latter is fairly high up in the percentage table. Takapuna. which opened so well, against. Carlton in the first round, but failed in the succeeding one. wiy hare a chance to,regain lost ground when ■ title Onehunga Club supplies the opposition. Takapuna's task is not too easy, hut the position is hopeful by reason of the unaccountable moderate showing of Onehunga to date. Balmoral, which is: going along very nicely so far and is; close on the 60 per cent mark, should have another good record on Saturday. Two clubs, Epsom (8) and Helensville (6), will be met. The latter clubs have not shown out so far in the competition and taking a line on this it looks 15 it Balmoral should at least hold the present 'points. ; 'I The Carlton Club, which holds a peri rentage of 52, appears to have a splenf misKance of tftKing tftis-totfil wel 1 'over the 60 mark. Three ciuhs will be .played, ' Remuera (18), Waiuku (8) and New Lynn (4). Remuera failed badly in the second round, while Waiukn is struggling along with its eight-teams quota. New Lynn may cause a little trouble, tut as "it is only a, small quota in this case a foss here "and there will not matter much if headway is made against the two larger quota clubs.

/GAMES I2T SECTION B PROSPECTS OF WEST END * There does not seem to bo any serious obstacle in the way of West End continuing its triumphant career in section B in this round. The 80 per cent Idiader of the section seems, even at tiuis juncture, to have a good hold on the section. The two clubs to be played on this 'occasion are Avondale (6) and Papatoetoe (4). The former should give the most trouble. Another seven oir eight wins to West End, which seem likely, will put the club in an almost unassailable position. Mount Eden, lying second with a percentage of almost 72. has prospects for a good round record. The opposing club, Devonport, which is well down the list, does not produce good results as a rule in this competition. The straight-out 16teams content between the. two clubs should provide a good test. Ponsonbv, third on tho list with a percentage of 65.6, will have its hardest task to 'date, the principal opposition comiriof from the whole of Grey X<ynn s quota of 14 teams. The rest of Ponisonbv's quota will be playing two teams from'To Papapa. As both Ponsonbv and Grey Lynn are well up in the section the struggle for supremacy will no doubt be verv keen on this occasion. Auckland Transport, which had three wins out of four games last round, will be striving for a continuation of this success. It is quite possible that the previous total will be equalled, improved upon, as the Papatoetoe_ Club, which supplies the opposition, is ono of thg low ones in the section. Ihe Transpott Club with 'a continuation of good results in the future rounds has a 3light chance of getting up close to West End.

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEYS EVENT AT ROTORUA Entries for the New Zealand championships and Auckland Centre tournament will close next Friday and Jl° n " day respectively. The New Zealand event' will he commenced on January 9. The formation of local teams lias been proceeding steadily for some time arid when the entries close it will be found that thf local patronage is in keeping with the average Aucklan bowler's desire to participate in aijly open tournament. , The publication of the draw for t.n> popular Rotorna lixture in January has aroused great interest in local howling circles. So great was the patronage' on tiiis occasion that a good number of teams had to he declined to keep the. number down to 55, which is nil the Rotonia greens will accommorlate at one time The Rotorna fixture always lias been regarded as a bowler s holiday ;is is shown bv the desire or players to enter l'or the annual contest.
