UNWATERING OF MINE

THE HIKURANGI TROUBLE MAY PROVE A LONG JOB i [by telegraph—OWN courespondent] WHANGAREI,' Tuesday In spite of optimistic reports as to the progress of . efforts to unwater the flooded Hikurangi mine, a number of the miners in the district are not so hopeful. The majority •of these men have long experience on the Hikurangi field, and they point to various shafts abandoned on account of the impossibility of coping with the inrush of water. The mine field is situated close to a large body of water lying in the Hikurangi swamp. At one time Hikurangi was a large producer of coal, but for the last 25 years water entering the workings has presented a problem, until finally the mines had to be abandoned to the water.

With their knowledge of tho difficulties of the past, some miners fear that the unwatering of the new mine shaft is going to prove a longer job than was at first contemplated when the mine was flooded 17 days ago.
