VETERAN JOURNALIST

DEATH IN AUSTRALIA (Received November 20, 10.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 29 The death has occurred of the veteran Australian journalist, Mr. John Sandes, formerly of the Melbourne Argus, Sydney Morning Herald and Sydney Daily Telegraph. Mr. Sandes, who was born in Cork, Ireland, -in 1863, was educated at King's College, London, and at Oxford, where he graduated B.A, in 1885. He went to Australia in 1887 and after service on the staffs of the Melbourne Argils and" Sydney Daily Telegraph, he went to England as special correspondent of the latter paper in 1919. He was present at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and entered Germany with the Allied arm.v of occupation. Mr. Sandes represented "the Australian and New Zealand morning papers as special correspondent on board H.M.S. llenown during the Empire tour of the Prince of Wales in 1920. He returned to Australia in 1922 and engaged in special journalistic work. Ho was the author of a number of novels.
