VALAMITO VICTORIOUS

MAJORITY DEFEATS SPRINTERS

MASTER APPELLANT SURPRISES

Keen finishes were a feature of the racing at Ellerslie on Saturday and in several instances the result was in doubt until the numbers were hoisted. Head margins separated the placed horses in the chief event, the Alison Cup, in which Valamito finished resolutely to win from the little-fancied Knight of Australia and Birthday Boy. The finish of the open sprint, the Cheltenham Handicap, was even closer, the New Plymouth horse Majority winning by half a head from the favourite Paddy the Rip, with Tooley Street a neck away third. The Takapuna Plate was notable for the defeat of the odds-on-favourite Balin&var, who was narrowly beaten by the improving Oriental Bay. 1

Three favourites, Kenneth Robert, Valamito and High Caste, were successful and all the winners were well supported with the exception of Master Appellant, who scored in the Ponui Handicap. Master Appellant was ithe extreme outsider in the field of l 1 and returned a dividend of well over a quarter of a century, i Training honours were secured by F. Smith, who won with Tepoto 1 and Valamito, and was second with Paddy the Rip. Both the stable winners were ridden by R. W. McTavish. The only other rider to achieve more than one success was H. N. Wiggins, who | won on High Caste and Oriental Bay. ~ *
