FALSE PRETENCES
WOMAN IMPOSED UPON AUSTRALIAN SALESMAN CHANCE TO LEAVE COUNTRY [ay TELECKAPH —PitKHS ASSOCIATION'] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday "Do not think 1 am going to leave you to fleeco other women and act in this contemptible way," said Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., to John Munro, an Australian salesman, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to-day to a charge of obtaining £ll from Olive McCarthy by false pretences at Christchurch on August 15. Munro was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence*, if called on within three years, a special condition being that-he leaves the Dominion on December 6, He was ordered to make restitution. During the last 25 years accused had built up a big reputation in the criminal world in Australia, said DetectiveSergeant McClung. In company with another man, Munro had obtained £ll by falsely representing that his friend was the ownbr of the racehorse Pango and that lie himself was a friend of complainant's two brothers. Munro had said that he had lost his money and that £ll was required for their fares back to the North Island. Ho had promised 1 to make immediate repayment. Accused, added Mr. McClung, was one of those persons without whom tho Dominion would be better off. -Munro had signed an order authorising payment of £ll from his possessions for repayment of the money. A boat was leaving Wellington on December 6 and it was thought advisable that Munro should leave on it. Munro said that he had been travelling as a showman for the last few months and he had some property, including a car, to dispose of he left. His wife was at present in Wellington. The magistrate ordered Munro to report daily to tho police pending his departure.
