\ MR. PETER MOORES t A former headmaster of schools in various parts of the Auckland Province, Mr. Peter Moores, died at his I home in Cornwall Park Avenue on | Saturday, aged 89. Mr. Moores was born at Runcorn, Cheshire, and began his career as a ' teacher at the age of 13. He taught : for a time in the Peak district of Derbyshire, and later became headmaster of the school maintained by the Duke of Manchester on the estate surrounding Kimbolton Castle, Hunt--1 ingdonshire. He is survived by his second wife, formerly Miss Amy Jane Phillips, of Mahurangi, and bv a daughter of tho first marriage aud a son and daughter of tho second marriage. MRS. EVA ELLEN LAING Tho death occurred yesterday, after . a long illness, of a well-known resident of Parnell, Mrs. Eva Ellen Laing, in lier 78th year. Mrs. Laing was the widow of the late iDr. J. A- Laing, formerly of Devonport, and the only daughter of tho 'late Hon. Henry Chamberlin, M.L.C. Mr. Chamberlin arrived at Auckland from England in 1853, and later acquired largo areas of land at Drury, Raglan and Hobsonville. He was called to the- Legislative Council by Sir Edward Stafford's Government in 18(59 and remained a member of it until his ■death in 1888. In her earlier years Mrs. Laing, with her mother, who resided in Gladstone Road, Parnell, took .ran active part in tho social life of Auckland.
