WOMEN'S CRICKET

OUTSTANDING PLAY The first scries of games in the Auck- I land women's cricket competitions produced some outstanding individual oatting and bowling performances. Lack of confidence accounted for the failure of some teams in their first innings and better form can be expected as the season progresses. Arawa, whose side comprises several representative players, took the field against Killarna and gained an easy six-point win. The opening batsmen for Arawa were not troublpd by the bowling and Miss I. Webb, an experienced player, gave a sound display to carry her bat for 48. Employing straight drives. Miss N. Hammond, a„ natural hard hitter, scored 24, while Miss A. Batty, who compiled 20, also gained tho best bowling average of tho day with four for four. Killarua fielded a weak team, many of tho players. being inexperienced. • Tho featuro of tho match between A.L.H.A. (A) and A.L.H.A. (B) was tho splendid innings of Miss J. Hanks, who showed great promise last year. Playing a variety of strokes, and showing a sound defence, Miss Hanks scored 71 not out. Opening for A.L.H.A. (A), she set up a partnership with Miss .1. Bilkey, which remained unbroken. Miss Bilkey revealed particularly good timing and quick footwork. Tho ranks of A.L.H.A. (B) have been considerably strengthened by tho inclusion of a New Zealand representative player, Miss I. Johns. In both innings Miss Johns batted consistently to score 25 and 56 not out. The B team is deficient in bowlers. Miss E. Smvtheman, for A.L.H.A. (A), a mediumpaced off-break howler, accounted for six wickets, but Miss T. Bond, finding a head-on wind too strong, failed to retain her usual good length. Tho junior grade match between Suburbs' and A.L.H.A. revealed some promising cricketers. Miss Miller, of Suburbs, made 24, while six other batsmen reached double-figure scores. It is anticipated that the junior teams will be increased by two more entries.
