MARRIED WOMEN IN JOBS

Sir.—l read with interest " Fair Go's ' letter re the above, and I would like to add my voice to hers or Ijis. I am single and a good tradeswoman. I lost mv position six months ago, and since I began job-hunting, my heart has ached for women not so fortunate as myself, inasmuch as I have a home. I was lucky enough to secure a fortnight's work during the measles epidemic. The two permanent hands were both married women, their husbands in constant employment. I was also asked to work for a week at another place while one of their girls was away being married. This seems to be a very common occurrence, employers allowing their girls time off to marry. I think, with "Fair Go," that it is time something was done about it. What is the use of crying out about a falling birth-rate if that kind of thing is encouraged ? The outlook seems pretty hopeless at times. One cannot help getting bitter. There certainly is not much of the "live and let live " spirit in the world to-day. Single women are denied a chance to earn a decent living, while married ones work to buy motorcars and other luxuries. What puzzles me is how a man has the nerve to propose marriage to a woman if he doesn't want to support her. Perhaps the reason I am single and job-hunting is because I have been waiting for a man who is a man. Disgusted.
