MOTION REFUSED

POLICY OF COUNCIL OTAHUHU MAYOR'S ACTION STURGES PARK IMPROVEMENTS The refusal of the Mayor, Mr. C. E. Petrie, M.P., to accept a motion terminated a lengthy discussion at the Otahuku Borough Council meeting on proposed improvements in Sturges Park. At the council's previous meeting a recommendation by the Works Committee suggesting that the banked track should be cut back to allow a level running track was deferred pending inspection of the site by the council. The matter was reopened when a letter was received from a resident expressing concern at the proposals and suggesting that the interests of cyclists should be considered by maintaining the banked track. The Mayor said there was a lot of commonsense in the letter. On inspecting the site he found it was proposed to leave an earth face Bft. high rising from a base of less than 3ft., and merging into the terraces. In his opinion the earth face would fritter away unless faced with permanent materials. According to the resident's letter an athletic championship might only be assigned to the park once in at least five years. Mr. Grey that the work be put in hand. The Mayor said he would not accept the motion until the Works Committee brought down a report on the cost involved. The motion implied a change in council policy. If the council wanted to change that it could be done through a report from one of the ommittees.
