DEFENCE
Sir, —The remarks of the Australian Minister of Defence regarding the defence position in New Zealand are both warranted and opportune. The question whether we can pull our weight in defending the Empire, in this corner of the world affects Australia vitally and she has the right to mention it. The won tier is that she has not done so before this. For our Prime Minister to characterise Mr. Thorby's complaint as a "piece of impudence" is, to my mind, both absurd and very bad taste. His assertion that the majority of the Empire was satisfied with our efforts in the direction of defence during the past three years will not carry much conviction among the great body of thinking New Zeaianders who are seriously concerned with this aspect of our affairs.
Surely the effort that Australia is making should urge him into doing something substantial in this matter, even if he had to sacrifice a million or two of his cherished social security funds. Without national security, social security is not likely to be of much benefit to us. Cr.ivE H. J. Wily.
