NOTED SOLDIER

INTEREST IN FISHING GENERAL SIR W. PITT-TAYLOR VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND Keen to renew his acquaintance with New Zealand trout fishing, General Sir Walter Pitt-Tavlor, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, India, arrived from Sydney by ■the Wanganella yesterday. Sir Walter, who was accompanied by Lady PittTaylor, is on leave, and intends to spend three or four months in New Zealand before returning to\England.

Sir Walter, whose command was abolished on November 1, spent a fortnight in Singapore and Java and a month in Australia before coming to New Zealand. Pie said that although his command had been abolished, there how being only three commands in India, he was still on the active list, and therefore was unable to comment on the international situation or matters of defence. A distinguished soldier, Sir Walter served in the South African War, being awarded both the King's and the Queen's medals, and the D.5.0., in addition to being mentioned in despatches. He also served throughout tho Great War, being mentioned in despatches nine times, and is the holder of French and Italian decorations. Sir Walter was aide-de-camp to King George V. from 1926 to 1928.
