FIFTY YEARS AGO

THE GOVERNOR'S SALARY The reduction of tho Governor'ii salary 50 years ago was the cause of considerable comment on the supposed meanness that this implied. The following is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of November 2, 1888 =— " U • "At last the vexed question of the Governor's salary has been settled, and a cablegram has been, received b y the Government from the Colonial Ofnce saying that Her Majesty will be recommended to assent to the Governors Salary Bill. This is the removal of the cause of friction between the Colonial Office and the colony; f but there are plenty of people-in,the colony who would have been glad if Her Majesty, had put her foot firmly down and refused the lopping-off of allowances. It would have been a well-merited snub to a 'parsimonious' Parliament. The salary is now the same as Lord Salisbury Receives for tho carrying out of the duties of Prime Minister of England and Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
