FURTHER IMPROVEMENT ABATEMENT OF EPIDEMIC EXPERIENCE IN THE CITY The incidence of measles in the Auckland metropolitan and ryral areas has been further reduced during the past week, and health authorities pow regard the epidemic which raged with varying severity in the province simpe April as having abated. Relatively few new cases are now occurring in the district. According to a report submitted to the Health Department by eight city firms with a total staff of 3787 people only six were away from work yesterday on account of measles. This is equal to .16 per cent, as compared with .2 per cent a week .ago, when there were eight absentees. Of six cases admitted to the Auckland Pospital during the week three were German measles and three of the ordinary type, complications occurring , in one case. Complications following measles were also responsible for the death of a woman, aged 2(5, in the Auckland district.

The outbreak ox measles was first apparent in North Auckland in April and, with the sickness spreading in the succeeding months, it was estimated that 10 per cent of the pupils were absent from their classes in July. Early in September measles were still taking heavy toll of business houses in Auckland, as many as 3 per cent of employees being absent from work at that time. Subsequently a steady improvement has taken place in the position, which is now regarded as practically normal.
