GIRLS' SPORTS

COLOURFUL DISPLAY SPECTACULAR GRAND PARADE HOUSE TEAMS IN KEEN CONTESTS Fine, healthy types of Auckland young woinnnhoocl were on parade at Carl aw Park on Saturday afternoon when the annual contests of the Auckland Girls' Athletic -Association were held before an attendance of about 8000 spectators. The weather was fine, though dull, and the ground was soft. Twenty-one teams, comprising almost 400 girls representing Auckland's various business houses, took part in the many drilling, marching and athleticevents. A feature of the afternoon's display was the spectacular grand parade, for which the sun shone out brilliantly. With their banners borne proudly alolt, the teams, attired in their bright, colourful uniforms, marched round the arena and finally formed up facing the stand. Banners were then dipped, and the crowd stood to attention as the National Anthem wqs played. Among the spectators were the Attorne.yGeneral, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, representing the Government, and the Mayor of Auqkland, Sir Ernest Davis. Addressing the competitors at the conclusion of the tournament, Mr. Mason said he and the spectators were immensely pleased to have - witnessed such a wonderful denfbnstration. "I know that it could not have beea done without intense training, enthusiasm and self-control," Mr. Mason said. He apologised for the absence of the Hon. Wi E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, who was to have been present. "It was a magnificent display," said the Mayor. He offered his congratulations t9 Mrs. W. H. Cocker, president of the association, Miss McNicol, chief referee and director of games, and Mr. K. C. Reid, instructor in physical drill, on the success of their efforts. The Mayor's call for three cheers for these officials met with a hearty response. The Grand Challenge Cup, presented to the team gaining the highest aggregate points in the A section, was won by the Sejwyn Shirt Company. The Pratt Cup, awarded to the runner-up, went to the Greer and Son representatives. Highest points in the B section went to Dearsly's, this honour carrying with it the Heard's Grand Challenge Trophy. The runner-up, which took the Oak Challenge Shield, was the M.K. Manufacturing Company team. Although the grand assembly of teams was the outstanding feature of the afternoon's display, the various physical drill and figure marching exhibitions were a treat to watch, executed as they were with commendable smartness and precision. A notable example of this precision was given by the Alex Harvey team in the final of the A section of the circle ball competition. The amazingly brisk and accurate manner in which the successful team handled the basketball in this event was favourably commented upon by all present. The team made only two slight slips, but the ball was never dropped. The drilling with white flags was a spectacular item, which drew prolonged applause. The figure marching was also smartly executed and was concluded by a movement in which the teams formed up in the centre of the ground into the large letters A.G.A.A. During the afternoon the captains of the various teams paraded in front of the judges in order that they might select Miss A.G.A.A. This honour was awarded to Miss Pearl Schroder, cf the Regent Clothing Company, the runner-up being Miss Phyllis Musgrove, of St. Peter's Sports Club.
