TWO GREAT FINISHING RUNS

[by telegraph—-own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Saturday A mix-up occurred at the start of the Short Handicap. Glenholnie and Peter Smith received a great advantage and were well clear ot the remainder in the running. Glenholnie was going at a very slow pace early , and he was not required to show any real speed until a furlong front -home, * when Mazaire challenged. With an even start, Mazaire probably would have won.'Peter Smith failed to stay, as did Cavantina. Do, Reske, First Shake and Palomar. Taruna lost so much ground at the Mart of the Borough Handicap that his task appeared to be hopeless. However, he came with a burst of speed in the straight and just missed a place. Perula was always among the leaders find won -well, but Wee Potts did not get a good run. Ferry Post, proved to bo the host of jzood things for the October Handicap. He pulled hard early and soon headed off Mystery Vet. Ferry Post is one of the best horses in his class and if he is taken to Auckland for the Trotting Cup he should set the others a vorv difficult task. Tonee revenged his narrow defeat in the Petone Handicap by scoring decisively in the President's Handicap. He made; two abortive attempts to go through on the inside and L. F. Berkett took him up on the outside. Tonee had charge half a mile from home and was not doing his best to win. Manna's Son runs consistently well and Fsther hung 011 to shade Graeie Fields, the driver of whom delayed his run too long Ma7;aire's display of speed over the last mile of the Novice Handicap was very impressive. He began badly and was giving the leaders about 20 lengths with a mile to go. He was still five .lengths from the leaders at the turn, but in the final furlong he .wore down Mongolian and won going away.
