SUMMER WEAR
GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOYS GREY SHIRT SUGGESTED BOARD SEEKS INFORMATION Summer-wear for boys at the Auckland Grammar School and the advisability of a lighter i/niform for hot weather were considered at the meeting of the Grammar School Board of Governors yesterday. The chairman, Dr. E. Roberton, said he did not know how the matter first arose, but the secretary, Mr. C. E. G. Tisdall, became aware that grey shirts were being sold as summer wear for the boys. The hoard had a paragraph in its prospectus stating that the uniform of bo.vs was a navy blue flannel shirt and serge shorts. Dr. Roberton read a letter from the headmaster, Mr. C. M. Littlejohn, who said that from time to time ho had been approached by parents with regard to the provision of lighter shirts for the summer. Mr. Littlejohn mentioned a lighter material to replace flannel and suggested that some action should be taken before the school opened next year. He did not suggest that the grej r shirts should be used for official occasions. Mr. C. R. Munro: It would seem that the headmaster had arranged for the manufacture of the shirts before he wrote the letter. Dr. Roberton: I do not know. ' The board will have to decide whether it will agree to a.change in the colour and weight of shirts and whether this should be uniform," said Mr. A. S. Richards, M.P. "I should not like to see on a ceremonial occasion some boys in blue and some in grey. At the same time I realise that the request for lighter wear is reasonable. Anything in grey will not lend itself as much to fading or shrinking as blue."
Dr. Roberton said the lighter material could be obtained in the blue colour. The matter was deferred until the chairman obtained further information from the headmaster and other schools.
