AIR LINER HITS MOUNTAIN

HURLED DOWN IN FLAMES

PUBLIC MEN AMONG DEAD By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received October 25, 9.11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 25 A shocking flying tragedy occurred in Victoria this afternoon. The Australian National Airways" Douglas monoplane Kyeema crashed into Mount Dandenong, 28 miles south-east of Melbourne, and the 18 persons on board were killed. The official list of the victims is as follows: Mr. T. M. Hardy Mr. C. A. Hawker Mr. L. S. Abrahams, K.C. Mr. Hugo Grant Mr. G. H. Goddard Mr. Sidney Hill Smith Mr. A. C. Gain Mr. L. W. Shirley A boy named Pringle Mr. G. Ling Mr. J. J. Massie The pilot, Captain A. Webb Mr. H. Gloe Mrs. E. Schraeder The first officer, Mr. A. Steen Mrs. H. Gloe Mr. Vaughan Tate The air hostess, Miss E. Jones The air liner had nearly completed a flight frpm Adelaide when apparently it was lost in a fog. It hit the mountain about 100 feet from the top, ploughed a deep path among trees and then dropped almost to the base of the mountain in flames. Four of the victims were thrown out terribly injured but identifiable. The remainder were trapped in the cabin and burned beyond recognition. Of the ill-fated passengers Messrs. Massie, Shirley, Goddard, Abrahams and Gain were members of the National Insurance Commission, who were returning from Western Australia where they had been inquiring into medical fees applicable to the Health Insurance plan. Messrs. Abrahams and Gain were among the leaders of the New South Wales Bar. They were associated in protracted Court proceedings here and in London which determined the legality of broadcasting racing. Among the other victims Mr. Hawker, of South Australia, was formerly Federal Minister of Commerce. Messrs. Hardy, Grant and Smith were en route to Canberra to take part in a wine industry conference. Mr. Tate and Mrs. Schraeder were passengers from Adelaide.
