BOWLING NOTES

FINAL OPENINGS HELD CARLTON CLUB'S FUNCTION SEASON NOW IN FULL SWING i BY SKIP The bowling season in Auckland is now i.n full swing. The clubs which opened last Saturday were not so fortunate as those which had held thetr functions earlier, as rain fell later in the afternoon and interfered with the games. The president of the Carlton Club, Mr. T. Wotherilt, who was associated with the foundation of the West End Club in 1910, and has been associated with bowling management during tho intervening years in both clubs, had his first experience of performing an opening ceremony. The president of the West End Club, Mr. F. Worsfold, Avho has been connected with the club for nearly the whole of its existence, also had his turn of official duty on opening day. In both cases the indi-i viduals could have held the highest i office in the club many years ago, but have always, up to now, preferred to see tho honour pass to someone else. Professor Segar in his official capacity as president of the Remuera Club, had a successful gathering. The Avondale Club, which is fast becoming a popular institution in tho district owing to the increasing number of players, also celebrated a successful opening day. Mr. J. Fearon, president, officiated. The Devonport Club, the last of the marine clubs to open the season, started on Saturday, when Mr. S. Kennings set the bowls rolling. A popular rendezvous for western suburban players, the Hallyburton-Johnstone Club also commenced the new. season.

LABOUR DAY EVENTS UNFAVOUK ABLE CONDITIONS Tho conditions were against enjoyable tournaments on Monday. The ■cold wind in the morning and the light drizzle which fell in the afternoon combined to make matters unpleasant for a largo number of enthusiasts. The Remuera tournament had a fair entry of outside teams, but the home combinations did well, as the three teams still in are local rinks skipped respectively bv J. C. Duncan, L. L. Macey and G. McMillan. The Remuera greens have improved considerably from last season and played nicely. The Epsom Club, which usually makes a feature of this tournament by way of a large entry, confined itseli on this occasion to a smaller event of 16 teams. This policy was brought about by the greens being not vet ready to stand up to a gruelling day's play. However, the tournament was a very enjoyable one as far as the conditions allowed. De Launay, Carlton, was again to the fore after defeating a good Auckland Club team skipped by JBennetjp. .The other section went to the local team in charge of the veteran, A. Wright, who has had a share of success in open tournaments lately. The Onehunga Club staged the largest event of the day with 28 teams participating. Two local rinks and_ two outside teams hi charge of C. Little, Carlton, and E. Jury, Ponsonby, shared the honours and the issue between the survivors will ,no doubt prove a very interesting and open one.
