FORM OF PLAYERS DEFEAT OF H. D. BRINSDEN By defeating H. D. Brinsden in the final of the Middlemore championship J. H. Young won his first major match-play event in Auckland. Five years ago Young reached the semi-finals of the New Zealand amateur championship at Titirangi, and he was narrowly defeated by H. A. Black. Until last year, when he won the New Zealand I late at Hamilton, Young had nut performed so well in championships, and his success yesterday was thoroughly deserved. For the first 10 holes in the final Young played par golf, but from that stage he was not hitting his shots confidently. He took the lead at the third hole, and became '2 up when he holed a putt of over live yards for a three at the sixth. Three putts on the ninth green cost Brinsden the hole, the players' figures to the turn being:— Young: 5 4 4 4 4 3 3 1 5—30 Brinsden: 5 4 5 4 4 4 3 1 o—3o Following a good drive to the 11th Young electod to play a run-up shot, but he hooked into the bunker and Brinsden played aafo for a win in four. The uncertainty of the game waa well illustrated at the 12th. Young's tee shot was pushed out into the trees and. after playing his second, he was faced with a difficult shot to tho green. He hit a splendid high mashie, and the ball finished within four feet of the pin. He holed the putt, and Brinsden, who was nicely on in two, had to' be content with a half. Young's lead was reduced at the 14th. when he three-putted, and he lost, the two following holes, at which he required sixes. At the 18th Brinsden's second shot caught a bunker and he required two to recover, Young's third being within six feet of the hole. Brinsden pushed his iron out into a bunker at the 10th and Young made no mistake in winning in 1 to 5. In the serai-finals of the Middlemore championship the Titirangi scratch players. Brinsden and Young, proved too strong for the Auckland club representatives. Bartleet and Abbott respectively. Peculiarly enough, it was on tbe greens that Bartleet and Abbott failed, a department of the game in which they are usually particularly good. Bartleet commenced splendidly against Brinsden, as he won the two opening holes with a four and a three. Brinsden holed a good putt for his four at the fourth, and his opponent missed a slightly shorter one for the half. Bartleet struck trouble from the tee at tho fifth, and Brinsden made no mistakes to square the match. Tho Titirangi player almost holed a three at tho sixth and Bartleet, who was stymied, three-putted to lose the hole. Brinsden misjudged the pace of the eighth green and, after overrunning the hole with his approach putt, he missed- the return. The position was unchanged at the next, but Brinsden again became 1 up when Bartleet's tee shot at the short 10th was hunkered. Both sliced their drives into trouble at the next, and Brinsden became 2 up when his third shot struck the flag aud finished dead. Bartleet played the better second to the ,12th and reduced his deficit, but he lost the 13th tt> a well-played three. Brinsden won the 16th to become 3 up. and he setfled the issue at the next, where Bartleet 6truck trouble in the trees. _ «j In his match with Abbott Younsr Took the lead at the second when his opponent failed to get dead from the edge of the green. Abbott squared the game at the fourth after Young chipped too strongly from the back of the green, and the three following boles were halved in good figures. Young became 1 up at the eighth when < Abbott three-putted. A glorious iron to the 10th enabled Young to increase his lead as he holed a four-footer for a two. He took the 12th in four to five, and Abbott again three-putted at the 13th to lose the hole. However, Abbott holed a good putt to win the 14th and the next was halved aftef each had missed a short putt. Abbott hooked his tee shot at the 16th, and he was forced to play out from the trees. Young hit a splendid iron to the green and made no mistake In holing a four to win the match.
