LIMIT CATCHES
FISHING IN CANTERBURY LARGE TROUT SECURED MANY ANGLERS SUCCESSFUL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT "j CHRISTCHTJRCH, Monday Canterbury anglers have been meeting with more success than usual this season. Many limit bags of trout have been taken from the rivers and streams of the province. Enthusiasm for fishing showed a marked increase just before the season opened. On the night before opening day, one Christchurch sports depot took £IOO in licence fees. There has been a big increase in the number of licences issued. Limit bags have been obtained in the Ashley River with minnow. Fly fishermen have not liad much success, but with warmer weather bigger catches with tho fly are expected. Most fish have been caught up near the gorge. Streams at the back of Kaiapoi have yielded limit bags, with an occasional big fish. Most have been caught on the fly and the bully. The main stream of the Waimakariri has been dirty for the past month, with the result that few fish have been caught. The south branch behind Belfast, however, has been alive with big trout.
The usual limit bags have been caught in tho Selwyn. The fish have been fighters, in beautiful condition. The bully has caught most, although a few have been landed on the minnow. The fish are not biting now quite as well as earlier in the season. Plenty of small fish have been taken from the Upper Sehvyn, but there have been few big ones. The Halswell, Kaituna and Hart's Creek have all been fishing well, with occasional good lags from the Kaituna.
