THREATENED COAL STRIKE A threatened coal strike created considerable alarm in London 50 yea l "* ago, and leafs were expressed that the strike might become general. The following is an extract from the New Zealand Heraj.d of October '22, 1888: "A largely-attended meeting 0 colliery owners was held to-day, wjj a resolution was passed regretting t » they were unable to grant an advanc of wages to the miners. They a agreed that the Mayor of Sh< e ® e ' along with representatives chosen . the miners, could inspect their o in order to prove they were not in position to pay higher wages. "The stock of coal at present in London will probably last a tor nl .' but fhould the strike become genera, much inconvenience and distress be experienced."
