BANK OF NEW! ZEALAND NEW GENERAL MANAGER MR. H. CHALMERS CHOSEN MR. P. L. PORTER AS ASSISTANT [BY TELEGRAPH —ritESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday The board of directors of the Bank of New Zealand announced to-day the appointment of Mr. H. R. H. Chalmers, at present assistant-general manager, to bo general manager in succession to Mr. P. W. Dawson, who retires on April 30 next. Mr. P. L. Porter, manager at Christ,church, will become assistantgeneral manager, Mr. L. Brinkman succeeding him at Christchurch. Mr. F. E. Ashby will become Wellington manager.

Mr. Chalmers entered tho service of the Bank of New Zealand at le Awamutu in 1899 and, after holding positions in various branches, was appointed accountant at Eltham. He was then appointed to a similar position in the Fiji branch of the bank an Suva. He remained in Suva for six months and afterward had war service lor three and a-half years with the Isew Zealand Expeditionary Force. Upon his return to New Zealand ho was given tho post of accountant at Gisborno and later at Auckland. Subsequently he was appointed manager at Dannevirko and later at Palmerston North. In June, he received notice of transfer to tho Auckland branch as assistant-manager, in place of Mr. G. Whitelaw. He was appointed manager at Auckland about two years later, taking up the post in 'December, 1930, when the then manager, Mr. F. W. Dawson, left for Wellington to fulfil the duties of assistant-general manager. Mr. J Chalmers took up the position of chief inspector of the bank in 1933 and later in tho same year became assistantgeneral manager. Mr. Porter was born at Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, and joined the Bank of New Zealand in 1904 at Queenstowm From 1910 until 1919 he was in the head office, and, after receiving an appointment as assistant accountant at Wellington, was transferred to a similar position at Christchurch in 1921. He was subsequently appointed Asliburton manager in 1922, Invercargill manager in 1924, and went to Suva in 1926 as the bank's manager in Fiji. During 1928 and 1929 he was attached to tho London office as assistant to the manager. In tho two following vears until his return to Christchurch in 1931 he did inspection work in Australia and New Zealand. In 1932 Mr. Porter was promoted from assistant manager to manager in Christchurch. Mr. Porter is related to one or the oldest Canterbury families. His grandfather, Mr. David arrived at Lvttelton in the Cressy in 1850, and with his two brothers took up land near what is now known as Porter's Pass.
