HUGE DREDGE ANCHOR

WEIGHT OF 34 TONS TRANSPORT ON THREE. TRUCKS [bv telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday A special permit had to bo secured for rail transport to the West Coast of a huge metal anchor or "spud," for the giant gold-dredge being erected at lkamatua. Becauso of its weight, the anchor can be hauled only at low speeds on the three trucks which are necessary to carry all its length of 6'2ft.

This "spud" is one of the largest pieces of metal work ever made in New Zealand. Its task will bo to anchor the dredge while it works through the rich flats of tlio lkamatua plain. At its end is a cast-steel point, 15ft. long, which will be sunk deep into the earth to prevent the dredge from backing away from tlio cut as its buckets scoop out the gold-bearing shingle and sand. The anchor weighs 31 tons.
