MAORI SEATS
GOVERNMENT GAIN MR. HENARE BEATEN HEAVIER VOTE POLLED SIR A. NO ATA WINS
Voting in the four Maori electorates yesterday resulted in one gain for the Labour Government, Mr. T. Henaro (National) being defeated for the Northern seat by Mr. P. K. Paikea (Labour). The other three Maori members, two Labour and one National, retained their seats.
A feature of the elections was the increased voto in all four districts, compared with the number of votes cast in 1935. The increase in the case of tho Northern seat was 807, Western 1649, Eastern 1541, and Southern 61. There is still one small return outstanding in tho Western contest.
