PACING TALENT

TWO STRONG BRACKETS R. B. BERRY'S GOOD HAND LAWN DERBY AS BACKMARKER LUCKY JACK AND PARISIENNE BY ABAYDOS The marks of the Australian horses are still not determined by the Handicapping Committee and only three have dropped out of the New Zealand Trotting Cup field, a most unwieldy one. The defection of Indianapolis, thrice winner of the race, is not surprising in view of his latest form, neither is that of Gamble, who is at the stud. Harold Logan stands his ground, but his Auckland running will be the deciding factor in his case.

As Lawn Derby won at Auckland off 4.22, it would appear he will be the back-marker. When he won in 4.17 3-5 Lawn Derby gave Lucky Jack 24vds and a very narrow beating, while King's Warrior, also in receipt of 24yds, was unplaced. Lucky .lack and King's Warrior have since been successful and, with Parisienne and Pot Luck, represent a fine quartet, who would make a great contest, under normal conditions. Unless there is pruning on a large scale the best horses may not have an easv row. Many on the limit do not measure up to New Zealand Cup standard, although Ginger Jack and M'orello may show some improvement, for they have undoubted speed. Auckland Candidates More hopeful prospects arc Ironside and King's Play, on 4.25. Ironside has made excellent progress, and his success in the National Handicap recalls the fact that it has proved a good test for Cup aspirants, lie will be •bracketed with King's Warrior, one of the genuine stayers, and the Auckland combination, like that of Lucky Jack and Parisienne, will have a solid following. King's Warrior displayed great form in August at a mile and two miles, and should strip in splendid order.

King's Play is > rated highly on his form of last season. On the same line is De Soto, one of the best pacers in the land when lie is right, but difficulty has been mot in giving him the preparation required. On 1.24 Graham Direct, although not always reliable, must be respected. He has an Auckland Cup and Wellington Gold Cup success to his credit and, caught in the right mood, is a hard horse to beat in any company. Back to his old form Grand Mogul, off the same mark, would take a power of beating, but he has to be taken on chance.

Pot Luck, who shares the 1.23 line with King's Warrior, has made the best grade by solid and consistent efforts. I'arisienne is one of the greatest pacing mares seen in the Dominion. and there is no disputing her genuineness over a long journey. She has reached a tight mark, 4.22, but lias youth on her side. Lucky .Tack, 4.22, won last year, and he is a horse of great possibilities. He won at a mile and a-cpiarter in August and his defeat at two miles in the Challenge Handicap did not lose liim any friends. At this stage half a dozen to enter into serious discussion are R. B. Berry's champions, Lucky .lack, and Parisienne. King's Warrior, Pot Luck, Ironside and King's Play.

VISITING TROTTERS RAPID RISE OF TONEE ARAPAI'S CONSISTENT FORM BY ABAYDOS Anions the visiting horses entered for the Auckland spring meeting are some trotters who raced well last season, including Tonee, All Bingen, Arapai and Big Kauri. Tonee was the star performer of the West Coast circuit, scoring four firsts and two seconds in seven starts. He opened his account at Awapnni in 3.31 2-5 off 3.49, and his successes included two at two miles. Having reached a 4.51 line, he will be handily placed in the Mountain Handicap.

Arapai has been a solid and consistent performer for several seasons, and at Awapnni and Wangarii ho has scored from long marks and at the latter mooting in .Tune won the Kirkwood Handicap from 156 yards and in the President's Handicap was second to Biworthy, 48 yards, from 180 yards.

All Bingen won her first race at Epsom last October and after a later success, came back to 3.42 and 4.58, from which lines she should extend her record. In the same stable is Bingen Chimes, who in his only race ran second.

Big Kauri, an aged gelding, after a few races, made good by winning the Oh awe Handicap at Ha'wcra, in easy fashion. He is on a 3.45 and 5.2 line, and surprise is expressed that be is entered at Auckland in the 4.52 class. Big Kauri is trained by W. A. Price. Audrey's Last, who was fourth in tho Oh awe Handicap, is a promising trottor without much experience. The visiting pacers also represent useful form and one from Hastings, Acceleration, is likely to show further improvement. Ho was third at New Plymouth to Purina and Vanora, in the fastest race of the day and, iVor finishing second to Vanora at Hawera in the Auroa Handicap, again the fastest event, scored in the Trial Handicap, and afc Wanganui ran second to Otaua in the Autumn Handicap and won the Suburban Handicap, two miles, going 4.42 off 4.55.

Gloriettn nml Elfie Parrish, who with Harold Logan, are due in Auckland early next week have good credentials and the first-named will he on the front of the 4.37 Labour Day Handicap. Efiie Parrisli. in her last start, was second to Reno at Wanganni, going 2.19 2-5 off a 2.54 line. Resistance, a novice of promise, figures in tlie Improvers' Handicap, and were it not for his habit of boring, the Man o' War gelding would have been in a higher class. Ho may show improvement on the Epsom track. Golden Star, another maiden pacer, showed promise when she gained a place at Carterton. She is by Worthy Bingen from Gold Girl, a mare who won good races for T. Poo. Shirley's Pal, a trotter by Worthy Bingon from a Dominion mare, was very green at tho start of tho circuit, but improved to run second at Wanganui.
