OUTPUT OF ZINC

SUGGESTED RESTRICTION LONDON NEGOTIATIONS POSITION IN INDUSTRY Negotiations'are in progress in London to achieve agreement among zinc producers upon some degree of cooperation which will ensure curtailment of output, states the Argus, Melbourne, it is known that some influential quarters are still moving toward securing agreement for the revival of the zinc cartel. If these efforts fail it is understood that mine owners will probably emulate the examplo of lead producers, who recently formed an association to take steps to adjust supply to demand. As it is, any restriction of lead output automatically reduces production of zinc concentrates. Moreover, many large smelters, notably in Belgium, have lately been operating at a rate much below capacity. Both lead and zinc producers have been concerned at the widening of the lead and zinc prices. Tho advance in lead of nearly £2 that followed announcement of the formation of tho Lead Producers' Association a tew weeks ago caused that metal to command a premium of more than 30s a ton over zinc. Before that tho difference had ranged between 10s and £l. If the difference is more than 10s many dealers in oxides use zinc instead of lead. This is important in paint manufacture. The present margin is about 23s a ton. LEAD CONTROL SCHEME REPORT BY SIR COLIN ERASER The chairman of Broken Hill South, Limited, and Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia, Limited, Sir Colin Eraser, who returned to the Commonwealth recently from abroad, said he would make a report on lead production control and other urgent matters at the annual meetings of his companies, which would be held in the near future. Referring to the economic position abroad, Sir Colin Fraser said that events had moved so rapidly that tho situation had changed completely. He was inclined to adopt an optimistic vow.
