GIRL'S LONG RIDE

MANY MILES ON HORSEBACK OWNER * OF A BAY MARE A young Australian milliner recently mounted her thoroughbred mare, Lassapher, and set off on the 580 miles journey to Melbourne, where she will arrive for the opening of the Melbourne Show on September 23. Last year Miss von Bartz rode Lassapher from Queensland to the Sydney Hoy a I Show. She is a milliner and 23 years old, her chief hobby being horse-riding. Three years ago she could not ride a horse, but wanted to so badly that sne gave up her work in Sydney and took a position as laundress in a Queensland outback station, where she was given the opportunity to ride Lassapher. She developed such an attachment for the horse that she worked on until, from her savings on a wage of 30s a week, she was able to pay the money necessary to buy her. Lassapher is a big bay mare and is now six years old.

Miss von Bartz intends to spend 23 days on the trip, 19 riding days and four as "emergencies," with an average of 37 miles p6r day and with 50 miles for the biggest one-day ride.
