VIENNA MOB

CARDINAL'S ESCAPE MURDER INTENDED ACTIVITY OF THE POLICE MANY ARRESTS MADE By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright

VIENNA, Oct. 10 A large crowd gathered to-night outside the palace of Cardinal Innitzer, in St. Stephen's Square, shouting "Traitor," "Criminal," "Send him to Daschau." The police prevented rioting. They had previously ordered the suspension of a series of Bible study services, which had begun in St. Stephen's Cathedral on Sunday and were due to be concluded with a sermon from the Cathedral on Thursday. Hundreds of people on arriving last night found the Cathedral closed and the square and surrounding streets guarded, while a number of antiCatholics were demonstrating. The police eventually cleared the streets and threw a cordon around the Cathedral. They made many arrests.

It is now revealed that Cardinal Innitzer was visiting a religious institution when his palace was attacked on Saturday. He returned at 10.30 p.m. to find Cathedral Square closed to traffic.. He obtained entrance to the palace through the house of his friend, Bishop Karnprath. The police interviewed Cardinal Innitzer at the palace at midnight. Men had entered his bedroom by a ladder and undoubtedly had intended to kill him. They burned his bed and flung out furniture from a window, making the room uninhabitable. The Cardinal spent Saturday and Sunday nights with Bishop Karnprath.

NEWS SUPPRESSED GERMAN NEWSPAPERS HITLER'S ANNOYANCE INVESTIGATION ORDERED t . i LONDON, Oct. 10 The arrest of Cardinal Innitzer in his palace at Vienna is denied, says a message from Berlin. The press has not yet been permitted to mention the attack made upon him. A semi-official statement issued for the benefit of the foreign press says half-grown elements took advantage of indignation at the Cardinal's attitude, and adds that Herr Buerckel will shortly issue a statement on the matter.

Herr Hitler is reported to have been annoyed on hearing the news when at Saarbrucken on Monday, and he, sent a special emissary to Vienna to investigate. Well-informed circles expect the early release of Bishop Niemoeller. The Pope is awaiting Cardinal Innitzer's account of the affair, says the Vatican City correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, after which he will lodge a protest. The Vatican organ Osservatore Romano protests in the name of Christianity and civilisation.
