BREAD DELIVERIES

BAKERS IN QUANDABY . "■ " \ > ELECTION DAY PROBLEM ■ 'h':M ROUNDSMEN'S HOURS UMITED' —: ■ .. '%J§ With strict legislative provisions l* force on election day, Auckland bakerti; are in something of a quandary in arranging for deliveries of bread on Saturday. In terms of the Shops and! - ' Offices Act, 1922, drivers cannot start work before 4 a.m. and the Electoral Act, 1927, make.s a half-holiday mandatory, with the result that roundsmen on the road after nocn would be committing a breach of the Act. The bakers seemed to be caught both ways and, if the legislative provisions required to be strictly observed, »♦ might prove difficult to deliver bread to all householders on Saturday, stated Mr. S. Green, secretary of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association, yesterday. The bakers, he added, made » special appeal to shopkeepers to provide facilities for receiving their supplies at an early hour on Saturday morning. I'he difficulty which had arisen under , the two Acts has been pointed out by the association to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H.. T. Armstrong, and his reply is at present awaited. It is hoped that provision can be mad# * for deliveries to continue after noon in order to supply all the householders.
