BLIND ATHLETES

ANNUAL COMPETITIONS The annual sports meeting promoted by the social club of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind will be held on the lower ground of the Auckland Grammar School on Saturday afternoon, next, commencing at 1 p.m. Nominations from blind members of the club have been coming forward for some timp. It is anticipated that the meeting this year will be the most successful yet held. Prospective competitors have been training consistently, and much interest in the competitions is. being displayed. There u-ill he four teams competing for the championship lor the Sir lan Fraspr Shield. Kach team has been placed under the guidance of a captain, whose job it is to train and instruct his protogees in the art of' athletics. The shield was won last vear by a team captained by l{. Gherardi. The events to he contested include an open 100 yards sprint, hop, step and jump, broad jump, throwing the javelin and putting the shot. To aid the competitors a tight wire is stretched the full length of the field and the runners are given a ring attached to a handle to guide tliein along the course.
