GREAT BARRIER ISLAND PREVENTIVE HEALTH PLAN The future of the district nursing service on Great Barrier Island was discussed in a "report of a special committee presented to the Auckland Hospital Board last night. The committee included Dr. ?>T. J. Hugbes, medical officer of health in Auckland.

It was stated that Dr. Hughes had pointed out that the total population of the island was about 387, of whom 04 were Maoris. The preventive work which concerned the Health Department was among the Maoris, who were mainlj at Katharine and Motairehe Bays, with a lesser number at Whangaparapara. The department's work did not include the cure and nursing of the sick or midwifery, which was the responsibility of the Hospital Board. The board's responsibilities included district nursing of a medical and surgical nature, together with ante-nntal ! and infant welfare work, Dr. Hughes said. Maternity rases generally left the island. The nurse should not be expected to undertake maternity work ether than in an emergency. The committee recommended that it should be suggested to the Health Department that it make a gr*,nt of £ls a year to the district nurse, Mrs. L. G. McLean, for preventive work among the Maori 3, and also pay for the regular launch trips to the Maoris at Katherine Bay and Whangaparapara The committee also agreed that the board should increase the district nurse's salary to £s£> a year, and pay for the launch fees which she incurred ih attending the European population. The recommendations of the committee were adopted. • \
