STOCK IDENTIFICATION
FILING OF NOSE PRINTS NOVEL SOUTH AFRICAN PLAN Finger-prints have long been considered infallible as a meahs of identification of humans. Now at the Sduth African Veterinary Research Laboratory at Onderstpoort nose-printa of sheep are being put to similar use. Nose-prints of sheep being used for experimental purposes, especially a study of the variation of their wool as a result of increasing age or change of feed, are carefully filed and may be referred to with certainty of correct identification at any subsequent time. At present the nose-print method is supplementary to tagging and earmarking, which enable more rapid identification.
Some years of recording will be necessary before it can be conclusively demonstrated that the same animal will always give the same print throughout its lifetime, but so far no variations, other than increased size of the markings with increased age, have been detected.
