NURSERY CARNIVAL

CORONATION CEREMONY FUNDS FOR.; KINDERGARTEN MORE THAN £232 RAISED Tho Nursery Carnival organised to raise funds for the Campbell Freo Kindergarten/ Freeman's Bay, ended in a concert and coronation ceremony last night in tho Manchester Unity Hall. It was announced by Mr. W. S. Morrison that, as a result of. the efforts of the kindergarten staif, the mothers of tho children and other friends, over £232 had been raised and that the mqnoy would be used for a sun porch and any other necessary alterations to tho present building. The hall s was entirely fillod with parents and friends, who wero entertained by a series of nursery rhyme tableaux performed by tho children, some of whom were only three or four years old.' v Prolonged applause followed each item, the audience showing by its, enthusiasm that the charm and freshness of a children's performance has a deep-rooted appeal. The Percussion Band The items presented were:—"The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe," "Tho Queen of> Hearts," "Little Jack: Horner," " Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary" and "Bo Peep," followed by "Old King Colo and His Retinue," who performed the crowning ceremony. The tableaux wore presented in costume and it" was obvious that the children had been carefully coached in their parts, for each item wag carried out with precision and smoothness. . The kindergarten percussion band, under tho leadership of a tiny girl who wielded her baton with all the tricks and flourishes of a professional conductor, was repeatedly encored by tho audience, while tho singing of the Kowhai School Choir for every item was another charming feature of tho entertainment. i Crowning the Queen The announcement of, the winner of .thfe Queen Carnival, Lois Dufty, was greeted with applause, and sho was duly crowned by Old King Cole with traditional ceremony. Her votes totalled 22,204, which, at one penny each, brought into the funds the sum of 10s'. The sum' of £67 was procured in the votes for the runner-up, Beverley A. grand march, round the hall by the children in costume took place at the conclusion of the nursery tableaux and at the end of the programme the children were presented with swaefs. Much credit is due to Miss lay Cawk-.. well, director of the kindergarten, fir.l her staff for the excellent training of the children, and to the mothers and interested friends who were instrumental . in raising the-money required for improving the building. ;v
