EUROPEAN CRISIS

Sir,—-War, which would have in« volved probably the, whole of white civilisation and also possibly - the Oriental, has been averted at the very last moment by the single-minded, courageous, tireless and almost singlehanded f efforts of Mr. Chamberlain, Prime Minister of and Leader of the Tory Panty of Great Britain. ConHpicuous among the offers of support given by Canada, Australia and the great Indian princes has been the almost complete silence of New "Zealand under its Socialist - Prime Minister.;' - .>■ '• /

It is sincerely to; be hoped that the New Zealand public has noted well the respective attitudes of the two divisions of the Labour Party in Great Britain to which our, Government allies itself. Firstly, give nothing away to Hitler, down with Fascism, war (but never a vote for a cruiser or a gun), and, secondly, peace at any price, "regardless of Britain's honour or well-being. Mr. Attlee, after striving for days to raise the British public against Mr. Chamberlain's policy of moderation, goodwill and common sense, has at-last come in with complete support in the final stages, but only when he realised that the public was behind the Prime Minister almost to a man. Is it not time that New Zealand, , even under a Socialist Government, ■ paid public tribute to the man and the Government who have fought our diplomatic battles for us with such conspicuous success P ■ D. M. Fbll. ,
