FIFTY YEARS AGO
THE CHINESE QUESTION Action to prevent Chinese from entering America from British territory was being taken "by American authorities 50 years ago. The following is from the New Zealand Hebald of October s, 1888: ' "A special resolution has been moved in the Senate requesting the President to treat with Great Britain in the direction of prohibiting Chinese froin reaching the United States from British territory. "Senator Jones has proposed to negotiate for a treaty with Mexico, as well as with England, to exclude Chinese from North America.". The following cablegram from Hongkong appeared in the same issue:— ' "Foreigners at Canton have addressed the Consuls protesting against the arbitrary obstacles imposed by Chinese officials of that place in respect to the landing and embarkation of goods, The matters in dispute have been referred to the Home authorities.'' • "
