MISS EDITH ASTALL NEW ZEALAND MUSICIAN PIANO AND VIOLIN PLAYER [from our own LONDON", Sept. 8 -Much success 311 the world of music lets been achieved by Miss Edith Astail, of Wairoa. who came to England in 1935 on an Associated Board Scholarship offered for two years in tho first instance. This scholarship has since been extended for a third and fourth year. In 1937 she took the diploma ot A.U.C.M. for pianoforte performinco and won the Chappeil Medal for plan * in the same year. Miss Astall's principal instrument is the piano, which she studied under Mr. Marmaduke Barton from 193;• until his death last July. Her second instrument is tho violin, which slie has been studying under Arthur Bent. Since taking her A.R.C.M. Miss Astail has been devoting her attention to solo and two-piano work and in May, with Miss J. Cameron, she took part in a two-piano recital at the Royal College of Music. Since tlion Miss Astail lias broadcast a solo recital on the Empire shortwave transmission to Australia and New Zealand, and a two-piano l'ecital with Miss Cameron to Canada. She was engaged to give a further solo recital to New Zealand and Australia on September 18, and again in a performance of two-piano works on October 9. A two-piano recital at Leighton House is also proposed for October or November. Miss Astail expects to be in New Zealand for the centenary in 1940.
