CAR SOMERSAULTS

DEATH OF WOMAN SON CHARGED IN COURT SPEED OF 60 MILES ALLEGED fnv TKLKGIIAPIJ —OWN COItIIKSI'ONDKNT] < TE PUKE, Wednesday A charge of negligent driving, thereby causing the death of Gladys Greenwood, at Pongakawa on July 21, was preferred against Aubrey Greenwood, aged 21, in the To Puke Police Court. Accused, son of tho deceased, pleaded not guilty. He was represented by Mr. F. C. V. Clark, of Wailii. The police case was conducted by Sergeant Henderson, of Tauranga. Messrs. A. B. Mnrton and W. E. Singleton, J.P.'s/wcrc on tho Bench. Leonard Arthur Borryman, of Waihi, who had been a passenger in the car at the time of the accident, said that accused had not driven at an excessive or dangerous speed during the journey. Ho could not give any reason for the car turning over. There bad been no mechanical trouble. Witness thought ho had climbed out of the hood of the car after it overturned. Evidence of the speed at which Greenwood's car passed his was given by Ernest Nieol, of Paengaroa. He would say that accused's car was travelling at 60 miles an hour. It was certainly being driven in a reckless and dangerous manner.

A toy motor-car was produced by Mr. Clark and used in an endeavour to gain a clear idea of what witness meant by stating that the car solnecsaulted four times. In tho first roll tho car was Hung on to its left sido over 011 to the hood and then to the right side, said Nieol, demonstrating with the model. The second roll took the car on to tho left side, the third roll to the right side, and tho fourth back again to the left side. .lens Jensen, of Pongakawa, said tho car had turned end over end four times. He had seen something fall out of tho car on the third turn and bad no doubt that this was tho body of Mrs, Greenwood . Accused was committed to the Supremo Court at Hamilton for trial.
