ALL-NIGHT SEARCH

MAN WANTED BY POLICE ARREST AT TOKOMARU BAY LONG TREK IN ROUGH COUNTRY [BY TELEGRAFH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] GISBORNE, ThursdayAfter having been hunted by the police since early yesterday afternoon and walking over 40 miles through rough-country and down creek beds to avoid being seen on the main highways, a man was arrested this morning at Tokoniaru Bay by Constable J. W. Beasley. Constables J. W. Birch, V. Bagge and N. H. Tuck were combing the district all night. It is understood the man was wanted in connection with an alleged offence in Whangarei last year. He appeared this morning before justices in Tokomaru Bay and was remanded to Gisborne. A report was received yesterday at Ruatoria police station that there was a suspicious character on Mr. 0. 1 • Williams' station at Wairongomai, 15 miles from Ruatoria. Constables Birch and Bagge set out to make inquiries, but before they could approach the man he went into the bush. The police organised a search party with the assistance of local residents. Two hours later Constable Birch saw the man walking down a no-exit road. As soon as he saw the constable the man ran off, and although the district was combed nothing could he seen of him. The police stations and residents on the coast were asked to keep a watch for the mail and the driver of a transport lorry, Mr. N. Kawai, also was given a warning. When ascending Takapau Hill Mr. Kawai offered a lift to the wanted man and he was arrested at Tokomaru Bay by Constable Beasley.
