CHARGE ADMITTED

CANVASSER'S LAPSE PROBATION GRANTED A charge of failing to account for sums of money totalling £43 lis lid was admitted by ttoland Stavers Smith, labourer, aged .'l7, who appeared before Mr. C. ]{.. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused was represented by Mr. Adams. Detective-Sergeant Mclliigh said accused was employed by the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, Limited, between November, 1936, and last July. He stole the money during that period. His average earnings were £4 a week and a certain sum was put aside for a guarantee bond. The sum covered the amount mentioned in the charge. Counsel submitted that the case was one for probation. It Was easy for a shortage to be found in his returns, as he had to visit 300 policy-holders each week. Nobody suffered as a result of the losses, as tho guarantee fund was sufficient to pay the amount involved. Accused was admitted to probation for one year.
