PROTECTING BIRD LIFE

CASE OF NATIVE PIGEONS PUBLIC WORKS RANGERS Increased measures have been adopted by the Government to provent illegal shooting of native pigeons, and the appointment of a number of officers of the Public Works Department as rangers is reported to have had the effect desired. The Minister of Internal"Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said yesterday that he had received the following letter regarding native pigeons:—"All should applaud tho effort made to prevent tho destruction of tho beautiful native pigeon, which is a truo roamer of our bush. X know that in my part of the country, sinco vigorous operations to protect tho bird were renewed, there are no longer feathers of wild pigeon lying about where I used to see them. The native pigeon, for its remarkable beauty alone, all should try to keep in the bush. It is one of the finest of the species of New Zealand birds." Mr. Parry said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. It. Semple, had rendered, through strict'instructions given to men engaged on tho various works to protect the pigeon and other native birds, great help in the administration of tho law.
