GOLF LINKS LOAN

STONE JUG COUESE SANCTION FOR £6500 MODIFICATION OF TERMS The proposal of the City Council to raise a loan of £6500 to provide for the erection of a clubhouse at. the municipal golf links at the Stone Jug has been sanctioned in a modified form by the Local Government Loans Hoard, according to a report presented by the town clerk, Mr. J. Melling, to the council last night. Mr. Melling said the loan was to be raised in two parts—one of £4OOO with a term of 20 years, and the balance of £2500, which represented the proportion to be spent in furniture and equipment, for a term of five years. The board was of the opinion that items of the latter nature did not warrant inclusion in a long-term loan and, indeed, that some should be met out of revenue. The report was received and the town clerk was instructed to prepare the necessary special orders for the raising of the loan. MUNICIPAL BAND PLEA FOR RETENTION RECONSTRUCTION PROPOSAL Arising out of a meeting held early this month to consider the decision of the City Council to disband the Municipal Band, a letter was received by the council last night from Miss C. O. Cassrells, asking that a deputation from that meeting should be received to urgo the retention of the band. The request was considered by the Finance Committee, which was of the opinion that no good purpose could be served by hearing tho deputation, as the council had already decided that the activities of tho band as at prosent constituted should be discontinued. It was suggested that tho writer should be informed that a sub-committee had been appointed to make recommendations for the reconstruction of the band as a brass unit on a limited subsidy basis, and that any suggestions would be considered by the sub-committee. This suggestion was agreed to. TAXICAB FARES AMENDMENTS TO BY-LAWS JOURNEYS IN OUTER AREA Additions to the by-laws to clarify points of difficulty raised by taxi firms were approved by the City Council last night. It -was decided that in respect of any taxi journey which was wholly or partly outside the inner area the fare should not be less than at the rate of 6d a mile for the whole distance traversed outside the inner area. This includes going to and returning from the hiring. When the hirer returns in tho vehicle by the same or a similar route, no charge is to be made for the return journey as far as the boundary of tho inner area. Where there is a period of waiting time less than five minutes, the distance actually traversed shall bo deemed to be increased by one-fifth of a mile for every minute of stoppage recorded on the taxi meter. SUPPLY OF WATER SERVICE TO AIR BASE NORTH SHORE POSITION The City Council decided last night that, in the event of the project to supply city water to tho North Shore boroughs of Devonport, Takapuna and Northcote not being proceeded with, a supply be made to the Hobsonville Air Base at a price of Is Gd per 1000 gallons, with a minimum charge of £250 a quarter. Some months ago tho council was asked by the Public Works Department to furnish' a supply to the air base, and the opportunity was then taken to offer to extend the pipeline beygiul Hobsonville to supply the three boroughs Tho offer was made to deliver \yater at tho respective boundaries on a 21-year contract at Is per 1000 gallone. Subjecl to tho acceptances of this offer, it was proposed that, the baso bo supplied at a suitable take-off point en routo at Is per 1000 gallons. This offer was made to the boroughs over two months ago, but, although several conferences have been hold, no unanimity has so far been reached between the three municipalities as to acceptance.
