Several passengers were killed and many others were injured and six train \ officials are believed to have been killed in a head-on collision ~ between two Southern Pacific Railway Company's trains 180 miles . from Los
Angeles. Apparently a switch did not work, causing the Argonaut train from New Orleans to crash into the Chicagobound Californian, which was waiting
on a siding. Both locomotives were overturned. On cutting through the twisted -wreckage of the steel carriages, rescuers found 10 people dead and more than 100 injured. The majority were asleep when the trains- collided. It is stated that a brakeman was fconfused and threw over the main line switch, sending the Argonaut into the siding. ». ■
