COLLAPSE OF TRENCH • COMRADE RESCUED 4 BURIED BY TONS OP SAND I RELEASE AFTER TWO HOTJES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday Two men were buried beneath tons of sand when a trench in which they were working collapsed at Patea this afternoon. One of them was extricated - unharmed, but the other was dead when he was dug out two hours later. The victim was:— Mr. George Allen, married, of Palmerston North. The rescued man, Mr. George Edgecombe, of Patea, was working with Mr. Allen when a trench 14ft. deep caved in. Rescpers could work only two at a time. Mr. Edgecombe, who was in a standing position was almost clear when a further slip buried him to the chin. It was not until an hour later that he was released. ■ Mr. Allen was in a crouching position when the fall occurred and was dead when released.
