AVONDALE FORM

SMART TWO-YEAR-OLDS A NOPHELES and orelio win IMPROVEMENT of tidfavaiter PADDY THE RIP DOES WELL BY AHCHER Some good form was displayed at the Avoriclale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting and several of the winners and place-getters' showed up in a very favourable light. The most impressive of the two-year-olds were Anopheles, Orelio. and Royal Tray and of the three-year-olds Philcourt, Royevrus and Russian Ballet. Among the handicap horses Tidewaiter and lvena demonstrated that they were much improved, and in the hack class Sly Fox, Javola. Paddy the Kip and Erlick were seen to advantage.

Forward condition and a tine turn of speed enabled Anopheles to win the Avondale Stakes in very convincing fashion in the hands of the promising apprentice R. C. Hatwell. Bred by her owner, Mr. H. Rcid Bell. Anopheles is a shapely filly by Vaals from Marshland, by Valkyrian from Malaria, by Quarantine from Minsk, by Martian, hence a member of the same family as Carinthia and Rona Bay. She was turned out in fine trim by P. E. Pope, who lias done so well with her halfsister Palnstre. More Serious Test Ahead

Anopheles has boon entered for tlie Juvenile Handicap at Marton on Saturday, but it is probable that she will have her next outing in the? Welcome Stakes at Ellerslic next month. She will have to run a furlong further in the Welcome Stakes than at Avondale, but there is no reason why she should not manage the longer distance successfully, although the chances are that she will he more seriously tested than was the case last Saturday. A good impression was formed of Roval Tray by the manner in which she did her Work before the meeting and she displayed promise in finishing second to Anopheles. She is a nicelooking filly who should pay her way. Royal Tray was not produced on the second day when Orelio, who was third in the Avondale Stakes, scored handsomely; Orelio would no doubt have been closer to Anopheles and Royal Tray if he had jumped out cleanly in the Avondale Stakes and they may find him more difficult to beat in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie. Orelio cost Mr. T. lmpey 1000 guineas at the yearling sales at Trenthain last January, and, although not big he is a colt of pleasing conformation and with a smooth action. On the sqore of breeding Orelio has a good deal to recommend him being by Limond from Waterwings, by Absurd from Sea Elt, by Seaton Delaval, hence a full-brother to Agrion, White Wings and Waikare,, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap. In some respects Orelio strongly resembles Mermin, who was a j brilliant two-year-old, and a fullbrother to Waterwings ! Philcourt Much Improved

Although he ran about somewhat under pressure at the finish of the Arondale Gairteas. the improving Philcourt was responsible for a sound performance in defeating the Wanganui Guineas' winner Russian Ballet. The good third lie ran in the Flying Handicap on the first day directed attention to his prospects and.as a result he was third choice in the betting. Philcourt is a robust chestnut colt by Philamor, son of Son-in-Law, from Ladv Marie, /by Romeo from Mario O'Dile, thus a half-brother to Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde and Marie's Acre. Up to the present the stock of Philamor have not come up to expectations, but Philcourt might easily prove the best of them, and a good three-year-old. An encouraging feature of his form is that he is improving with every race and he. is likely to make a good deal more progress before he reaches the zenith of his powers. The two winning performances of Royevrus stamped him as a good colt ; and he went from the hack class on the opening day to open company on the second in the manner of a real racehorse. As his, winnings in three successes amount to £465. Royevrus is still eligible for tho hack races, and he is likely to take considerable beating in that class, especially in the events run at set weights. Royevrus is. a chestnut by Surveyor from Desert Fire, by Diacquenod from Cross Fire, by Camp Fire, and he is owned and trained by W. Townsend, who turned him out in "fine condition, and had a well-deserved turn of luck. / Russian Ballet Beaten

In s.pite of the fact that she was defeated by Philcourt in the Avondale Guineas, Russian Ballet was by no means discredited, and she went under by only a short head in a hard finish. The manner in \Vhich she fought on at the end demonstrated that she is not lacking in courage and. even if she fails to beat the best of the colts in the classics, she appears to be a bright prospect for the Oaks. Russian Ballet has left the impression that middle distances may not be beyond her, and it will be interesting to see her tested over longer journeys %n a mile. She is a daughter of Nghtmarch, Melbourne and New Zealand Cup winner, from Praise, winner °f the New Zealand Oaks, by Liniond from Eulogy, ancestress of many good horses, and one of the gems of the New Zealand Stud Book

. The Avondalc Cup winner Tidewaiter is an example of a horse who proved of no account in the early part of his ■career, developing good form with . "is three-year-old .season that he manned to win a couple of minor races, •and he remained in the hack class "Ml just recently, when he won .a , couple of hack, races at Riccarton. The Avondalc Cup was his first attempt in °Pen company, and the manner in he outstayed the opposition at |ne end indicated that he will go on tp further success in longer races.
