VOTERS' PROBLEM
JEWS AND ADVENTISTS OBSERVANCE OF SABBATH 19 MINUTES FOR POLLING UNUSUAL POSITION ARISES £HY TELEGRAM —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday Members of the Seventh Day Adventist and Jewish Churches will have only 19 minutes in which to record their votes on polling day, October 15. This is because both Churches observe their Sabbath from sunset on Friday until sunset on Saturday, which on October 15 occurs at 6.41 p.m. Polling booths will close at 7 p.m. Neither Church permits its members to write on the Sabbath unless for special reasons, which do not include the recording of votes. Persons would not therefore be able to record their votes until the close of the Sabbath. It is believed that members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church will be able to record their votes during the limited time at their disposal, as they will be able to go to the booths immediately the Sabbath ends. Their afternoon service on Saturday finishes about 3.30 p.nj. or 4 p.m. The Jewish service, however, does not conclude until shortly after sunset. Special provision may be made to permit Jews to exercise their votes and it. is possible that this will be by way of postal voting.
