The author sots the present against the background of the past so that his book is full of interesting historical details concerning persons, places, buildings and customs. There are accounts of how the city and port are laid out, how Paris is governed, how it feeds itself and conducts its business, how- its shops and factories are run, how to seo its museums, libraries and churches. Mr. Brangwyn feels that I'Vonee has some mysterious quality which allows the past to keep on living in and through the present.
