LOCAL BODIES DIFFER

LAND FOR RUBBISH DUMP CONFERENCE AT WHANGAREI [by telegraph OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI. Friday The action of the Whangarei Borough Council in serving notice on the Whangarei Harbour Board that it was its intention to take an area of 10 acres of reclaimed land from the board under the terms of the Public Works Act for a rubbish dump aroused objections from the board. As the result of a deputation from the board that waited on the council, a committee of the council and one from the board inspected various areas that the board was prepared to transfer to the council. One particular area of six acres the board was , prepared to transfer free to the council, except for the costs involved, and for other areas that were inspected the board was prepared to negotiate with the council for purchase. However, it would definitely fight tho council if it proceeded with the taking of the area that was first suggested. ''This area has cost the board over £1000," said tho chairman of the board. Mr. J. A. Finlayson, when speaking at the conference. "We will fight the council right through if it is decided to proceed with the taking of this area, but we are prepared to negotiate in all friendliness in regard to the other areas, as we realise the council must havo an area for the dumping of rubbish."
